How to Wear Shapewear for Ultimate Tummy Control

LaSculpte’s 5 Tips On How to Wear Shapewear & Rock It

We’ve been reading Mindy Kaling’s new book, Why Not Me? Have you read it yet? Have you heard of it? If your answer to either of these questions is no, then we recommend taking a trip to your local library or bookstore and remedying that as soon as possible. We’ll wait…

Of the many pull-able quotes in her new book, the successor to her hilarious New York Times’ Bestseller, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), this line is one of our utmost favourites: “My secret is: even though I wish I could be thin, and that I could have the ease of lifestyle that I associate with being thin, I don’t wish for it with all my heart. Because my heart is reserved for way more important things.”

THIS. This right here. The truth is, some of us will never get to Conventionally Thin. Many of us will try and get close. Perhaps we’ll stay there for a long time, or our visit will be short and sweet. But, some of us won’t get there at all. And that’s perfectly okay. We were all created differently. The point is to feel good about yourself and make the most of what you have. Which leads us to our second favourite quote on how to look spectacular, red-carpet or otherwise: “Fit is everything.” Although Mindy was referring to clothing and having it perfectly tailored to your body – which is wise by the way – shapewear plays a large part here.

This week we’re looking at how to wear shapewear. Here are 5 helpful tips.

 1. Find Your Size and Stick With It

When it comes to buying shapewear, this is the rationale we often hear: If wearing size X helps me to look this lean, then downsizing to size Y will only help me appear even smaller and more toned. In a way, we can understand the reasoning behind this, but it’s incorrect. Going down a size in shapewear doesn’t increase its effectiveness. It’s actually counterproductive. What you get are bulging body parts, garments that constantly roll and decreased circulation that can lead to physical harm. The moral here: Find correct your size and stick to it. It will be your very best friend.

2. High Waist Briefs: The Best Shapewear for Tummy Control

The torso is a fabulous feature, but it is often the culprit behind many a fashion faux-pas. High waist briefs keep muffin tops and back bulges at bay, whittles your waistline, and as San Francisco-based stylist Christina Santelli of Share Some Style puts it, “makes your tush look like you could bounce a quarter off it.” This shapewear garment’s great for nearly every body shape, however pear shapes should consider waist shaping garments with medium control or lower if your overall goal is to balance out your body and not shape it. A high waist may further reduce your figure, creating an even wider appearance on your bottom half.

3. Shapewear Shorts Tone and Conceal Panty Lines

Where cricket thighs and static cling are an obnoxious issue, shapewear shorts are the perfect solution. Shaping dually prevents inner-thigh chaffing and firms the natural waist, hips and thighs. The perfect fit will lie flat against your skin, providing a smooth appearance free of underwear lines. These can be worn under pants, fitted skirts and dresses.

4. Bodysuit It for Top-to-Bottom Slayage

Body slips are the ultimate shapewear piece. Originally designed to reduce transparency under sheer frocks and prevent chaffing and clinging, body slips have evolved to provide some serious support. Styles these days can boost the bust, tighten the torso, tone the waist and thigh, and enhance the bum to create a svelte, show-stopping silhouette. Always important is being realistic with your shapewear expectations. When worn properly, shapewear will smoothen and tone, but they can’t bring you down several dress sizes.

5. Give Your Shapewear a Break

You know how music causes Missy Elliott to lose control? Your shapewear will lose control if it doesn’t get a break, and in a far less exciting way. Not allowing your shapewear time to rest and reshape itself will reduce its overall effectiveness and its lifespan. To avoid this, purchase multiples of the styles you know work best for you and rotate them periodically.

Take proper care of your shapewear!

As she closes the chapter (Unlikely Leading Lady), Mindy leaves us with this last piece of advice: “If you’ve got it, flaunt it. And if you don’t got it? Flaunt it. ‘Cause what are we even doing here if we’re not flaunting it.”

Sculpte on, fellow warriors.
