Looking good doesn’t have to be a chore. Sure it would be so much easier with the help of a personal stylist, but not all of us have that luxury (if you do, by all means put them to use and get your money’s worth!). Really the trick to looking your best is knowing your body. This will help you determine the shapeware and fitness clothing that works best for it.
When it comes to body types, there are roughly five categories: Oval, triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle and hourglass. Most women find themselves squarely in one of these categories. To find out your body shape you will need to measure yourself. Those numbers will help you determine which of the silhouette shapes you fall into.
Characteristics: Narrow shoulder, small top/bust, defined waist, and full hips or thighs.
Recommendation: Slips, control underwear, high-waist slimming shorts, and bodysuits are great for pear-shaped women. To create more balance, go with a padded or push up bra.
Characteristics: Shoulders and ribcage straight with bottom and hips, with an average stomach and little waist definition.
Recommendation: Women with rectangular silhouettes tend to have less pronounced curves, so emphasis should be placed on creating definition at the natural waistline. This is best achieved with a waist cincher. For less definition and more control, panty girdles will work great.
Characteristics: Broad shoulders, narrow waist and hips, and a flat bottom.
Recommendation: Often times the goal with this body shape is to shift the focus downwards. This is best done through specific clothing styles, but shapewear does have its place. Waist cinchers can help add more definition to the midsection. For more control and bottom enhancement, pair it with a high-waisted brief.
Characteristics: A full bust, small waist, defined hips and a rounded bottom.
Recommendation: Of all the body types, the hourglass is deemed the most balanced. Now, that’s not to say that this body shape is better than the others – ALL are beautiful and perfect – it just means that clothing is typically designed to fit this shape by default. Likewise, just about any shapewear bodysuit would suit this silhouette.
Characteristics: Rounded shoulders, average to large bust, full middle section and a flatter bottom.
Recommendation: Shapewear that specifically targets the stomach area, such as waist cinchers, control underwear, slips and slimming shorts. Panty girdles are particularly good for apple-shaped women.
